Rape and murder case: Man gets life sentence for rape and murder of minor girl in Patna | Patna News

Patna: In a fast-track procedure, a Pocso (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court in Patna A British court sentenced a 50-year-old man to life imprisonment on Thursday after finding him guilty of raping two underage girls, aged 8 and 10, and murdering the younger one.
While delivering the verdict, ADJ VI and Special Judge Kamlesh Kumar Mishr also imposed a fine of Rs 115,000 on Devanand Rai alias Bhoklu and convicted him under Sections 376 (AB) (punishment for rape of a woman below 12 years of age), 302 (punishment for murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of the offence) of the Indian Penal Code, along with the SC/ST Act and the Pocso Act.
City Police Commissioner (West) Abhinav Dhiman said the incident took place on January 8 when Rai raped two Mahadalit girls from a village in Phulwarisharif on the pretext of giving them cow dung. “After committing the crime, he smashed their heads with a stone and then left the spot, thinking them dead. One of the girls survived and narrated the ordeal. Rai was arrested on January 13, after which he confessed to his crime,” he said.
Based on the forensic report and other points of investigation, an SIT headed by Phulwarisharif ASP Vikram Sihag filed a charge sheet of murder and rape against the accused on February 21, invoking the Pocso and SC/ST laws. A 146-page charge sheet was filed.
The SP said the Patna police had asked for a speedy trial. “The judge has given priority to the case. The accused was found guilty on July 18 and the verdict was announced on July 25,” Dhiman said.
According to police, the clothes of the victims and accused were kept and the stone used in the crime was also kept as evidence along with medical reports and statements.
