Houston Roughnecks sign former LB D’Juan Hines

The Houston Roughnecks made another defensive move. Former New Jersey Generals LB D’Juan Hines signed with the team, just one day after the Roughnecks added LB Christian Sam.

To be honest, it’s a surprise that D’Juan Hines remained a free agent for this long. He was undrafted during the USFL draft process and was also not selected in the Super Draft.

The reason this was shocking is because Hines was fantastic with the New Jersey Generals. He was a starter in Ted Cotrell’s defense for a few years, totaling 152 tackles and 1.5 sacks during that time.

Hines started nine of New Jersey’s ten games during the 2023 season. He posted a defensive rating of 64.6, via PFF.

D’Juan is no stranger to the spring football scene. He played with the New York Guardians of the XFL in 2020, compiling 19 tackles and one interception.

During his time in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, D’Juan made four tackles. He’s a veteran with a ton of professional experience and now he’s looking to bring those talents to the Houston Roughnecks for the final games of the season.

The chamarious Gilmore has given up

The Houston Roughnecks have waived OT Shamarious Gilmore. Gilmore has been disappointing this year, considering his success with the Philadelphia Stars a year ago.

Houston picked up Shamarious during the dispersal process. He ended up appearing in two games, playing just 21 snaps total. He’s dealt with injuries throughout the year, and now his season appears to be ending with a release.

Final Thoughts

As for the Houston Roughnecks and their playoff aspirations, they are dead in the water. The team blew a nine-point lead to San Antonio in the final moments, falling to 1-6. They are now eliminated from the playoffs.

Now, general manager Lionel Vital will look to evaluate and re-evaluate this team at the end of the regular season. With three games remaining, one has to imagine that these players will be playing for their positions next season.
