Two children killed, another injured in Atlanta apartment shooting

Two teenagers were fatally shot and another child was injured early Tuesday in an Atlanta neighborhood, authorities said.

The shooting happened in Oakland City, a neighborhood in southwest Atlanta. Someone called authorities to the scene around 12:30 a.m., Atlanta police said on Facebook.

Police found three victims in the stairwell of an apartment complex, including two 13-year-old boys and a 12-year-old boy.

One of the 13-year-old children was pronounced dead at the scene while the other died later at the hospital. The 12-year-old child was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified two of the victims as Jakody Davis and Lamon Freeman.

“Right now, homicide investigators are on scene,” Lt. Andrew Smith, commander of the homicide unit, said at a news conference early Tuesday morning. “We’re reviewing video, doing a walkthrough and talking to witnesses.”

Smith said investigators do not yet have a motive and are actively trying to figure out what happened.

“It was tragic at first, but when we’re dealing with minors, it’s even more tragic,” Smith told reporters at the scene.

The victim was about to celebrate his birthday

One of the victims, Lamon Freeman, was due to celebrate his birthday soon, according to relatives who mourned the boy’s loss Tuesday.

“(I’m supposed to) say HAPPY BIRTHDAY…but now I say LongLiveLame,” a close friend wrote Tuesday morning. “Love you Lamon…RIP and tell your dad Bone we love him 2. All watch over your mom and the rest of the family.”

In the post, the child’s relative urges people to lay down their arms and end the violence.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Atlanta Police Department Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
