A Michigan man’s court video of a traffic violation went viral. Now he’s in trouble again.

A Detroit-area man whose May court appearance for a traffic violation went viral when he was seen on video behind the wheel was arrested Wednesday for the same violation years earlier in a different community. The man was in a court near Ann Arbor for a follow-up hearing on a driving without a license charge when Judge J. Cedric Simpson said there was a 2015 warrant for his arrest in the Detroit suburb of Allen Park. The man was taken to jail by a court officer. “Wow. Was I shocked? Absolutely,” defense attorney Dionne Webster-Cox said outside the court. The man became an internet sensation last week when video of his appearance in Simpson’s court on May 15 surfaced. The man was accused of driving without a license. He appeared via video, a common practice at the court even after the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m driving to my doctor’s office right now. Just give me a second,” the man told the judge. Simpson was astonished that a man was driving with a suspended license — during a court hearing. He revoked the man’s bail and ordered him to appear at the Washtenaw County Jail that same evening. The man was held for two days. The judge clarified Wednesday that the license suspension was never lifted, dismissing news reports that suggested the man was the victim of government incompetence. “He’s never had a license — ever,” Simpson said. Michigan’s secretary of state, who is responsible for issuing driver’s licenses, said the judge was right. Webster-Cox said her goal was to clear up the court cases and get the man licensed to drive. “I can’t change the past. … At the end of the day, mind your business,” she said.
