SCAN Health Plan Awards Grant to Houston Food Bank to Reduce Food Insecurity

HOUSTON (KIAH) – The city of Houston continues to be one of the nation’s top cities attracting foreign tourists. The strong economy and low cost of living attract new residents. That’s great, but increasing population also increases the number of neighborhoods where working-class residents struggle to maintain a healthy diet.

According to the Houston Food Bank, more than 1 million people in the Houston area are food insecure. Feeding America reported that more than 16% of Harris County residents were food insecure in 2022. Liberty County had more, with 18% of residents food insecure. In an effort to reduce this urban problem, SCAN Health Plan’s Community Giving team awarded the Houston Food Bank a $10,000 grant to alleviate food insecurity. Nearly 4,000 boxes of food will be distributed to various populations of low-income seniors.

SCAN Health Plan is a nonprofit Medicare Advantage plan serving more than 200,000 members in 5 states, including Texas. As part of their mission to promote community awareness, the nonprofits have programs such as the Community Giving Program, where the team provides health education to local residents. The Volunteer Action for Aging program provides volunteer opportunities to strengthen the relationship between community members and older adults.

The Houston Food Bank has served approximately one million residents in Southeast Texas since 1982. The organization distributes more than 100 million meals and other essential products in 18 counties. The Food Bank also offers programs to teach nutrition and health management.
