BOONVILLE A medical helicopter was called to the scene of a car accident in northern Oneida County Thursday evening, authorities said.

It happened just before 6:30 p.m. on Millers Woods Road in the town of Boonville.

According to the sheriff’s office investigation, James Carr, 38, of Boonville, NY, was driving south in a 2005 Jeep Wrangler when a deer entered the roadway.

According to police, Carr took evasive action to avoid the deer, but then veered off the west shoulder and struck a tree. Deputies mentioned that the roads were wet and excessive speed was another factor.

A passenger, identified as Erica Clifford, 36, of Cold Brook, NY, was initially trapped in the vehicle and had to be rescued by members of the Boonville Fire Department.

After being extricated from the rubble, Clifford was flown to SUNY Upstate Medical Center. According to emergency responders, she suffered a compound fracture to her right leg as well as several other lacerations and complained of pain in her right hip, knee and heel.

Meanwhile, Carr was assessed at the scene by local EMS for a headache and leg pain before being transported to WYNN Hospital for further treatment.

As of press time, police determined that Carr was driving on a suspended license at the time of the accident.

Carr has been served three citations in connection with the incident, which may be returned to the Boonville Town Court at a later date.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Boonville Fire Company, Boonville Ambulance, Mercy Flight and Grower’s Collision & Towing of Boonville.
