Actor Mohanlal responds to explosive Hema committee report: ‘Don’t destroy the industry’

Malayalam actor Mohanlal made his first statement on August 31 after recently resigning as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).

Addressing the media for the first time since his resignation, Mohanlal discussed the Hema Committee report that exposed cases of sexual assault against women in the Malayalam film industry and urged everyone not to allow the scandal to “destroy the industry”.

“We request you not to put all the focus on AMMA. The investigation is on. Please do not destroy the industry,” Mohanlal said, according to ANI.

Mohanlal’s resignation on August 27 was a significant step. It was a result of moral responsibility after allegations of sexual abuse were made against some members of the AMMA board. In response to the controversy, the entire board of the association also resigned.

In his remarks to the media, Mohanlal expressed his support for the Hema committee report and called it a positive step by the government. “These questions should be asked of everyone. This is a very labour-intensive industry. Many people are involved in it. But you cannot blame everyone. Those responsible will be punished, the investigation is on,” he said.

Mohanlal assured the public that all concerns would be taken seriously and investigated.

The Hema Committee report has sparked widespread outrage and brought attention to sexual exploitation and harassment in the Malayalam film industry. Several celebrities have come forward and shared their own experiences of harassment and exploitation. As the investigation continues, the industry is under intense scrutiny, with many calling for systemic changes to ensure a safer environment for everyone involved.

Many social media users also expressed their support and defended Mohanlal.

“This legend doesn’t have to bear the entire burden of Mollywood…!!! He is Malayalam’s own Mohanlal. We will always stand behind him! (sic),” said a user on X.

“It’s hard to watch him being insulted and humiliated on stage by his own media groups. Whatever the issue, he’s someone we all grew up with!” wrote another.
