Man who died in Weld County Jail custody identified by medical examiner – Greeley Tribune

The Weld County Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the 56-year-old man who died Sunday in custody of the Weld County Jail.

Weld County Sheriff’s Office detention officers found James Darwin Goldstein unconscious in the jail shortly after 3 p.m., according to the Weld County Critical Incident Response Team. Goldstein was pronounced dead after officers performed CPR and requested medical personnel and paramedics.

The Weld coroner is awaiting the results of the autopsy report to determine the final cause and manner of death, according to the agency’s identification released Thursday.

The incident is still being investigated by the Weld County Critical Incident Response Team, the coroner’s press release said. The team will release more information as it becomes available.

According to online arrest records, Goldstein was booked into jail in February on suspicion of sexual abuse of a child.

Greeley Police Detective Brian Hunziker is leading the investigation. For more information on the case, contact Hunziker at [email protected].

Goldstein’s death is the second fatality this year at the Weld County Jail. In May, 50-year-old Keith Schmedtje died in custody due to a “medical incident,” according to police.

Two inmates also died at the Weld County Jail the year before. Last January, officers performed CPR on a woman who was having trouble breathing and later took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police reported.

A few months later, in November, an inmate suffered a medical emergency and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, according to police.
