LTA revokes 13 driving licenses and cancels 112 – FBC News

The Land Transport Authority confiscated 13 driving licences and cancelled 112 between August last year and June this year.

The LTA has advised 58 drivers and issued them 1,206 warnings and 45 final warnings for the purpose of the hearing.

This is compared to the period from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2023, during which the LTA counselled 284 drivers, issued 2,217 warning letters to drivers and cancelled and suspended 42 driving licences.

Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau says the decline in road deaths is due to several strategic initiatives by the LTA and the Fijian Police Force.

These initiatives include 24/7 joint enforcement operations by the LTA and police.

He stressed the need to launch nationwide road safety awareness campaigns that highlight the dangers of reckless driving, the benefits of safe driving and the responsibilities of drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

The Minister added that the Ministry is working with relevant stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with road safety regulations and standards, thereby significantly reducing the number of traffic violations and accidents.

He says they will continue to support ongoing initiatives to sustainably reduce road deaths, including implementing a multi-pronged approach that includes both enforcement and road safety education.

From January to April this year, the LTA conducted 225 educational and awareness-raising activities in schools, benefitting 41,169 students.

Nineteen public awareness programs reached 4,137 people, 104 office awareness programs reached 6,147 office workers.

In total, 128 driver road awareness training sessions were conducted, affecting 11,991 drivers, 99 passenger road awareness training sessions, affecting 24,380 passengers, 77 pedestrian road awareness training sessions, affecting 8,085 pedestrians, 124 public relations training sessions, affecting 30,919 people, and 117 defensive driving training sessions, affecting 4,227 participants.

A total of 893 awareness-raising measures were carried out with an impact of 131,055.
