Man with revoked driver’s license registers with court via Zoom while driving

A Michigan man faced the consequences of his appearance in court this month.

Corey Harris, whose driver’s license was suspended, did not appear in court in person for his May 15 hearing, but when he logged in via Zoom, his driving was caught on camera, according to a video recording of the session.

First, Washtenaw County Judge Cedric Simpson asked Harris if it was safe for him to stop so the court could proceed.

“I’m driving to my doctor’s office,” Harris replied. “Just give me a second.”

After Harris confirmed his whereabouts, his attorney, Natalie Pate, requested an adjournment of two to four weeks.

But the judge seemed stunned as he looked through the documents.

“Maybe I’m not understanding something,” he said. “This is a driver whose license has been suspended? And he just drove? And he doesn’t have a license?”

Pate confirmed this and Simpson repeated these facts while looking around the courtroom in disbelief.

“I don’t even know why he would do that,” Simpson said, shaking his head.

The judge then revoked Harris’ bail and ordered him to report to the Washtenaw County Jail by 6 p.m. that same day.

Harris dropped his head back and cried out, “Oh my God.”

It is not clear whether Harris turned himself in or not.
