U.S. Coast Guard breaks ground on new facility in Buffalo

The US Coast Guard’s Eastern Great Lakes Sector is acquiring new facilities.

The new buildings on Fuhrmann Boulevard will serve as a base for the Coast Guard’s Buffalo Team and Aids to Navigation Team. Coast Guard officials say the new building will enable more efficient operations and support for critical Coast Guard missions along the eastern Great Lakes, including search and rescue, law enforcement maritime and maintenance of aids to navigation.

This construction project in Buffalo, which began Tuesday morning, would cost the Coast Guard $32 million.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the crews here before you represent the finest Coast Guard in the world. They deserve world-class facilities to conduct inherently dangerous missions. This groundbreaking ceremony recognizes the investment in our facilities, but it symbolizes also the investment in our people.” said U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Neal Armstrong.

The Coast Guard is currently working on 70 projects nationwide.

Coast Guard Sector Eastern Great Lakes is responsible for more than 570 miles of shoreline stretching from Vermillion, Ohio, to Massena, New York.
