At around 7:15 a.m., police cars arrived and officers armed with assault rifles made their way to the house.

About 12 police officers were seen with firearms.

At around 7:50 a.m. two more ambulances arrived, but there seemed to be no panic or rush.

The RNZ reporter on the scene said police spoke to residents as they entered or left the building.

Residents could be seen lining up inside the building to speak to police before leaving the building one by one.

He said the situation appeared to be under control and there appeared to be no danger to the public.

A resident of Auckland Harbour Suites said it was a “chaotic” place to live and there were often arguments on her floor.

“I had to call the police a few times.”

She was unsure of what incident had occurred in the building this morning, but said no one in the building was able to get in or out.

Police told residents they did not know when they would be allowed back in.
