Maharashtra man marries 17-year-old niece and rapes her; case filed

Police in Thane, Maharashtra, have registered a case against a 23-year-old man from Jalna district in the state for marrying his minor niece two years ago, an official said on Saturday.

The police have also filed charges against his brother and the victim’s father, he said.

“Based on a complaint from the girl, who is 17 years old and now pregnant, an FIR was filed against the trio on Thursday under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act,” the Wagle Estate police station officer told PTI.

The case has been transferred to Mantha police station in Jalna district as the crime occurred under its jurisdiction, he said.

According to the official, the accused are the girl’s husband (23), her maternal uncle, his brother and the victim’s father (43).

Quoting the complaint, the officer said the wedding took place on July 13, 2022, when the victim was only 15 years and five months old. Her father had married her to her maternal uncle. The wedding was solemnized at Mantha in Jalna, the complaint said.

According to the FIR, the victim was repeatedly raped by her husband after which she became pregnant, the official said.
