India is set to miss out on a medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou after bronze medalist boxer Parveen Hooda was banned for 22 months for failing to provide whereabouts information. Parveen had won the bronze medal in the women’s 57kg weight category at the Asian Games last year and thereby secured a quota for the Paris Olympics. However, she was banned earlier this month by the International Testing Agency (ITA), the body responsible for administering results, after she failed to declare her whereabouts three times in 12 months.

“The ITA confirms that boxer Parveen Hooda has been suspended for a period of 22 months, effective until July 16, 2025, after he committed three reporting violations within a 12-month period, as set out in Article 2.4 of the Anti-Doping Rules the International Boxing Association (IBA ADR)1,” an ITA statement said.

“In addition to the period of suspension, the athlete’s results achieved between December 11, 2022 and May 17, 2024 will be disqualified,” the statement continued.

The 2022 Asian Games were postponed by a year due to COVID-19 in China and were held from September 23 to October 8, 2023, which falls within the period specified by the ITA and therefore Parveen will be deprived of the bronze medal she won.

This development means that India’s total medal count at the 2023 Asian Games will drop from 107 to 106. However, this will not affect the country’s fourth place in the overall medal count.

In an unprecedented embarrassment to Indian boxing, the country was forced to abandon the women’s Olympic quota in the 57kg category. Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Jaismine Lamboria will compete for the 57kg quota in the final Olympic qualifier starting in Bangkok on Friday.

In boxing, a quota is allocated to the country and not to the athlete.
