Houston-area communities still without power after storm

CenterPoint Energy confirmed that the Lazybrook/Timbergrove area was one of the hardest hit in terms of power outages.

HOUSTON — Several Houston-area communities are approaching five days without power after last Thursday’s destructive and deadly wind storm.

“We’re still all in the dark,” Danecia Sellers said.

The sellers live in the Timbergrove neighborhood. She and other families in her community watched the forest around them collapse during the storm.

“The trees were going swoosh, swoosh,” Sellers said. “It was so scary. The cats came. I said close the door, close the door. It gave me heart palpitations. I’ve been through hurricanes, but this was very different.”

Many of these trees fell on roofs and power lines that crews are still working to assess and repair.

“A lot of sweating, it’s really hot,” Sellers said.

Not far from Seller’s house, Sharon Williams returned home hoping the power would be restored.

“No, no electricity here,” Williams said.

Frustration continues to mount among neighbors.

“The frost was bad, but it’s crazy,” Williams said. “It’s 95 degrees. We’re 4 days without power.”

For Cynthia Goodwin, her apartment is also seriously damaged. The smell of mold as the heat rises inside has already made this place unbearable.

“The carpet is soaked,” Goodwin said.

While everyone waits for the lights to come back on, neighbors lucky enough to have generators set up a charging station for anyone who needs extra power.

Line crews dot debris-lined streets, offering some hope that they haven’t been forgotten.

“I hope it comes back very soon,” Sellers said.

CenterPoint Energy confirmed that the Lazybrook/Timbergrove area was one of the hardest hit in terms of power outages, but the company’s outage map indicates that power should be restored to that area by on May 21.
