CNN hosts presidential debate in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – In another sign that Georgia is one of the most important states in the country’s politics, CNN announced Wednesday that it will host a debate between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump on June 27, 2024. in the Global News Network’s Atlanta studio.

The debate will be broadcast live on CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español, CNN Max and CNN.com, at 9 p.m.

A New York Times/Siena/Philadelphia Inquirer poll released this week shows Trump leading Biden in Georgia and four other critical battleground states.

Polls indicate “an erosion of support for the president among young, non-white voters unhappy with the economy and Gaza,” the New York Times said.

The polls came just days before Biden became the second sitting U.S. president to deliver Morehouse College’s commencement address, following in the footsteps of his former boss, Barack Obama, who delivered a speech in 2013.

Biden will deliver the speech to the private, all-male HBCU on Sunday, May 19 at 9 a.m. His speech will mark the president’s first visit to the Peach State following a campaign rally in March.

But almost immediately after the announcement, students, faculty and alumni began expressing concern about Biden’s visit to campus. This was due to Biden’s reluctance to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians.

The November election will be the first presidential election rematch since 1956. In 1952, Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower defeated Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson after then-President Harry Truman chose not to run for a second full term. Four years later, Democrats nominated Stevenson for president again, leading to a second defeat by then-President Eisenhower.

Among Republicans, no presidential candidate has ever been nominated for three consecutive elections; Grover Cleveland, a Democrat, was elected president in 1885 and served only one term before being elected to a second term four years later (1885-1889 and 1893-1897). President Franklin Delano Roosevelt holds the record for the most appointments: four.
