Two Measures Prove Bills’ Josh Allen Is the NFL’s Best Clutch Quarterback

It’s easy to fall in love with the arm strength of the bazooka and the running ability of a gazelle, which causes an important intangible element of Josh Allen’s game to be overlooked.

In addition to producing touchdowns at a machine-like rate, the Buffalo Bills quarterback has developed a knack for delivering in critical moments. In fact, metrics show that no active field general in the NFL has performed better than Allen in tough situations.

The proof comes from two statistics recently thrown into public discourse by our friends at Focus on professional football.

First, PFF used its scoring system to determine the best-performing quarterback during each quarter of a game. In 2023, Allen posted the highest fourth quarter rating (89.3) among all NFL passers. The Bills’ QB1 thrived in the final 15 minutes of regular season games last year, completing 72.6 percent of passes and averaging 7.8 yards per attempt.

Allen has thrown seven fourth-quarter touchdown passes to just three interceptions in 2023, while adding five touchdowns and 14 first downs on the ground with less than 15:00 on the clock.

Equally impressive, Allen, 28, has been PFF’s highest-rated quarterback when his team is trailing over the past three seasons. As of 2021, Allen leads all his rivals with a 92.3 mark in catching. Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow (90.9) is second, followed by Kansas City’s reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes (88.7) in third.

Throughout 2023, Allen has engineered game-winning fourth-quarter drives on the road against the Chargers, Chiefs and Dolphins.

According to the data, when the situation is dire, Allen is the best guy.
