Habitat For Humanity of Houston County is building 4 homes at once

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — Just off the busy streets of Watson Boulevard is Orchard Way, home to the Habitat for Humanity Houston County Revitalization District.

Dozens of colorful houses sit next to each other, with each house on the street built for a single family.

“It often takes a lot of time, money and community support to get a house back up and running,” said Director Bill Goggins.

But when the city of Warner Robins called Habitat to let them know that three lots on Orchard Way had been approved to build homes, they didn’t hesitate because “we have three wonderful families who really need a home.” !

Then the city of Perry contacted Habitat to inform them that land there had also been approved for housing; so, they also continued this project.

Now, for the first time ever, Habitat For Humanity of Houston County is faced with the challenge of building four different homes at once. Each accommodation is individually tailored to the needs of each family based on information collected during the application process.

Currently, 34 families live in the completed houses; Once this project is completed on Orchard Way, there will be 37 homes in the revitalization district.

Additional storage with detached or attached sheds to wheelchair accessible bathrooms.

Shannon Haskell of Houston County Habitat says her slogan this year is “Let’s Build Together.”

“It’s so much more about creating than just a house,” Haskell said. “A lot of these families, when they step in, we find that they’re no longer fighting to put food on the table. They’re starting to think about their own goals, a lot of them are going to college and starting a career. Their kids are starting to do well in school, and they’re going to college, too.”

This is also the idea behind community partnerships. Goggins explained that almost all four homes are almost finished, but volunteers can help add some finishing touches before each family moves in, which is currently planned for July.

“We are waiting for the last electrical package, the cabinets, we have finished the woodwork, we are in the painting phase, the last thing would be landscaping and appliances, so we are getting ready to go towards the end,” said he declared.

But it will take you and your community partners to help them finish the homes.

“We can always use more and more help from the community to continue the mission,” Goggins said.
