ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is taking over a case after four people, including a suspect, were shot Tuesday afternoon at a downtown Atlanta food court.

Here’s what we know so far about the shooting.

Where the Downtown Atlanta Shooting Happened

The shooting took place at the Hub at Peachtree Center, located at 225 Peachtree St NE.

It is a popular lunch and coffee destination for those who work, live, and visit downtown Atlanta. It is surrounded by many hotels and businesses and is usually packed with people at lunchtime every day of the week.

How the Hub Shooting at Peachtree Center Happened

Around 2:17 p.m., officers became aware of gunshots coming from the Hub at Peachtree Center, according to Atlanta police.

Police said a 34-year-old man armed with a handgun entered the food court. After a brief altercation with another person, he shot that person and two other people. An off-duty APD officer then took action and shot the suspect before law enforcement could arrest him.

What we know about the victims

Police said those shot alongside the suspect were a 47-year-old man from Grayson, a 69-year-old woman from East Point and a 70-year-old woman from Atlanta.

APD said all those shot were “alert, conscious and breathing.”

What we know about the suspect in the downtown Atlanta shooting

According to APD, the 34-year-old man in custody is a convicted felon who served time in prison for armed robbery. He already has 11 arrest cycles.

“This is an individual who should never have possessed a firearm,” said APD Chief Darin Schierbaum. “An individual who should never have put this community in danger but an officer in this department was able to put an end to that threat.”

The name of the suspect has not yet been released.
