Atlanta boil water advisory lifted following water main breaks

ATLANTA — The boil water advisory has been lifted in Atlanta after six days during which many residents did not have access to clean running water.

A statement was sent Thursday stating that the water sample provided met U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards, as required by the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.

The city of Atlanta’s Watershed Management Department said it would notify the Georgia Division of Environmental Protection.

“DWM is committed to protecting the safety and well-being of residents in the City of Atlanta. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this unforeseen issue,” the statement read in part.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and the Department of Watersheds updated the public Wednesday after repairs were completed and water was restored to the area. Officials said that in addition to the initial repairs, they are exploring other leak detection solutions for the future. The department said it has installed an AI device to notify them when pipes need repairs.

FEMA Region 4 plans to send a resiliency expert to meet with the city and review long-term solutions.
