Shark attack map shows all incidents in the US this year

Last year, shark attacks were reported along much of the U.S. coast, with most incidents occurring in Florida and Hawaii.

So far in 2024, no fatal attacks have been reported, only two incidents in which the victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A 46-year-old swimmer was attacked off the coast of California last week. The man suffered bites on his torso, left arm and hand in the incident about 100 yards from the shore in Del Mar around 9 a.m. on Sunday.

City officials said the man was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with “serious but not believed to be life-threatening injuries.”

The beach was closed to swimmers and surfers following the incident and will remain closed until 9:00 a.m. on June 4.

“Following protocols developed by the California Marine Safety Chiefs Association and the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, lifeguards posted signs and closed Del Mar beaches within a one-mile radius in both directions of the incident – approximately from 6th Street to North Beach – to swimming and surfing and notified neighboring jurisdictions,” officials said.

Meanwhile, according to the Charleston Coast Guard, a 65-year-old man was bitten while spearfishing 20 miles off the coast of Charleston in April.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Vincent Moreno told local news station WSCS that after the incident, the man covered his injury with a tourniquet and was then taken to the hospital.

Since 2003, there have been 22 recorded fatal shark attacks in American waters, most of them off the coast of California and Hawaii.

The most recent fatal shark attack was recorded in December off the coast of Maui, Hawaii. The island’s police said a 39-year-old man from Haiku was injured near Pa’ia Beach.

Maui police said water patrol officers brought the man to shore via jet ski, where they administered first aid before taking him to an island hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries. The next day, the victim was identified on the Maui County website as Jason Carte.

While many of the shark attacks occur on animals swimming in the Pacific or Gulf of Mexico, fatal encounters have also occurred on the Atlantic coast, although these are far less common.

In July 2020, the first recorded fatal shark attack in Maine occurred about 20 meters off the coast of Bailey Island, south of Brunswick.

The victim was identified as Julie Dimperio Holowach, 63, who was swimming with her daughter when the incident occurred, according to local media. Holowach is believed to have died in the water, while her daughter was unharmed and was able to swim to shore.
