ATLANTA — The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management initially said water disruption would be citywide, but later clarified it was limited to the affected area.

Two large water main breaks left customers without water in a wide area of ​​northwest Atlanta, from downtown to west, downtown and southwest Atlanta . A boil water advisory is in effect for parts of metro Atlanta.

A water outage began at 5 p.m. in parts of metro Atlanta as workers began repairing the pipe. We don’t know when the water will return.

The first main break was reported at the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and James Boulevard. P. Brawley Drive around 8 a.m. A spokesperson for the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said the break was caused by a 48-inch transmission line directly connected to the city’s water treatment plant. A second 32-inch main cable is also broken.

The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said impacts from the main break are widespread and affecting downtown Atlanta. Some customers are without water and others have low water pressure. The DeKalb County Fire Department sent a 3,000-gallon water truck to the city of Atlanta.

A third water main appears to have ruptured in the West Paces Ferry area. This break, on Beechwood Road, affects residents, businesses and fire hydrants in this area. It is not known whether this main break is linked to the other two.

Parts of metro Atlanta in the shaded area will experience a water outage starting at 5 p.m. when crews begin making repairs. Residents in these areas are urged to prepare to be without water for an “indefinite” period of time.

The DWM is calling for immediate water restrictions to allow system pressures to recover.

A boil water advisory has been issued for much of metro Atlanta. Anyone experiencing low pressure or outages is urged to boil water before drinking or use bottled water for drinking, cooking, preparing baby food and brushing teeth.

DWM also reports that another water main failed in East Atlanta, in the area of ​​2922 Glenwood Ave.

It is unclear when water will be restored or how many customers were affected.

The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management now says a 36-inch water main also broke. Both pipes are transmission lines that transport large volumes of water to the Atlanta metro area.
