Thousands of Houston residents face new power outages following severe storms

HOUSTON – A severe series of storms in the Houston area knocked out power to more than 370,000 people Tuesday.

CenterPoint’s outage tracker spiked to 325,000 at the height of the storm.

Entergy experienced more than 57,000 outages north of Houston, from The Woodlands to New Waverly.

The blows come nearly two weeks after nearly a million people lost power due to the deadly storm caused by the derecho.

CenterPoint called it a widespread event spread across Harris County, with pockets of power outages in the north, south and northwest areas of the city.

At a press conference Tuesday evening, CenterPoint said that while they were unable to provide a timeline for power restoration, they had provided additional assistance to speed up the process.

Although Tuesday’s storm was not as powerful as the one on May 16, CenterPoint said its crews were finishing restoring power to customers during the last storm before they were hit by another.

“Our teams are tired but we are working,” a CenterPoint spokesperson said Tuesday.

As of 8 p.m., approximately 105,000 customers were still without power.

CenterPoint urges customers to always stay at least 35 feet away from downed power lines and damaged electrical equipment. Treat all broken and damaged equipment as energized and report it to the company at 713-207-2222.
