Update: HISD schools without power due to severe weather in Houston

As of Friday evening, more than 120 Houston ISD campuses still did not have power.

HOUSTON — The Houston Independent School District said it continues to monitor the situation on its campuses across the city.

As of Friday evening, HISD said 122 campuses still did not have power and there was no estimate of how long it would take to restore it.

The district is also assessing damage to trees and buildings on all of its campuses.

Superintendent Mike Miles visited four elementary schools Friday and said Robinson, Paige, Sinclair and Pugh elementary schools suffered damage and had no power.

The district said all four schools “should be able to serve students once power is restored.”

“Our goal remains for all students to return to school safely on Monday, but power must be restored before students can return to their campuses. Power outages remain the most significant issue,” HISD said in an update.

The district also said it was working with CenterPoint and city and county officials to ensure the safety of students Monday.

At one HISD school where the power was not cut, a few students were still roaming the halls Friday.

Booker T. Washington High School administrators told KHOU 11 they are already planning to host a group of students from Zimbabwe for a 10-day cultural exchange program. However, due to a power outage at their hotel, these students spent most of their day at school where they were still able to take advantage of the program.

“Many people have expressed their support to ensure these students are not left without. Our students came out to make sure they greeted them,” said Dr. Carlos Phillips, principal of the school. “We hope everyone can open their school on Monday.”

HISD said families in need could visit the Sam Houston MSTC and Austin High School distribution sites Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

School events planned this weekend will take place at the discretion of individual principals, HISD said.
