Houston Astros Again Linked to Superstar First Base Trade

Houston Astros Again Linked to Superstar First Base Trade

Over the past few weeks, the Houston Astros have been repeatedly mentioned in trade rumors. As the team rebounded during its 2024 season and got back into contention, they are starting to be viewed as a team that could look to make a big deal.

If they decide to make a major trade, it seems likely that first base is a position they target.

Jose Abreu played first base for much of the season, but the Astros parted ways with him due to major struggles. They could now use a long-term option.

Toronto Blue Jays All-Star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been suggested as a potential target for Houston. He would help the team win this season and would be a long-term player the franchise could build around.

CBS Sports recently linked Guerrero to the Astros once again.

While they list him as a potential trade candidate before the trade deadline later this month, they also mentioned that the Blue Jays could decide to keep him for at least the remainder of the year.

“Time flies. It seems like just yesterday that Guerrero was getting ready to make his major league debut; now he’s more than a season away from free agency. A lot has changed in the interim, including his position, but some things have stayed the same. For example, Guerrero remains a middle-of-the-line presence whose ability to impact the game is undeniable. There’s little need to discuss the rest of his game, other than to note that teams tend to pass on right-handed first basemen. If that proves to be the case here, the Blue Jays could end up keeping him at least through the winter.”

Two other teams have also been mentioned as potential trade contenders: the Seattle Mariners and the Washington Nationals.

During the 2024 season, Guerrero was impressive again. In 89 games, Guerrero racked up 13 home runs and 52 RBIs while posting a .295/.370/.460 average.

These numbers show why Houston would want to pursue him. He is truly a franchise player and could be the face of the franchise long term.

At just 25 years old, Guerrero could help the Astros be competitive this season. However, he is also guaranteed to play at least one more season after 2024.

If Toronto is open to offers for its star first baseman, Houston should work hard to try to get him. He would be a great fit and fill one of the Astros’ biggest needs.
