Recap | Revs fall 5-1 to Crew, return to action Wednesday night against Atlanta United

FOXBOROUGH, MA (June 29, 2024) – The New England Revolution (6-11-1; 19 pts.) fell to the Columbus Crew (9-4-5; 33 pts.), 5-1, on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. Midfielder Emmanuel Boateng scored New England’s only goal in his 200th Appearance in MLS and 100th start to his career, before the visitors scored five unanswered goals to end the Revolution’s four-game winning streak.

New England’s high press generated several scoring opportunities early in the game and led to the first goal in the ninth minute, when Boateng intercepted a pass between Columbus’ center backs and chipped past Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte for his second goal of the season. However, Columbus quickly rallied to tie the score in the 19th minute.th minute thanks to Cucho Hernández. The Revolution had several chances to add a second goal, with Giacomo Vrioni registering shots on target in the 18th.th and 39th minutes. Vrioni finished the night with six shots, a new single-game high for the Albanian.

The visitors took the lead thanks to Max Arfsten’s goal in the 43rd minute.rd minute, and doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time thanks to Diego Rossi. After the intermission, the Revolution immediately threatened to pull one back when Vrioni saw another shot attempt go just over the crossbar. The match remained closely contested until Columbus scored on a corner kick in the 73rd.rd minute, with Rudy Camacho heading home a cross from Rossi. Rossi and Crew striker Cucho Hernández each had a goal and two assists in tonight’s match.

Revolution defenseman Brandon Bye played in his second straight game after returning from a knee injury last August, seeing 26 minutes of action. Matt Polster wore the captain’s armband for New England, as Carles Gil missed the match due to injury. Polster was supported by Boateng and Ian Harkes in midfield, while in the background center back Dave Romney dressed for his 200th Start of career in MLS.

New England returns to action with a midweek match on Wednesday, July 3 against Atlanta United FC. Kickoff at 7:45 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium is broadcast nationally on FOX Sports 1 and can be watched for free on the Apple TV app in English and Spanish.
