Arrest in connection with the investigation into shooting

Kirksville Police have made an arrest in connection with a report of shots fired in the early morning hours of June 9, 2024. Nakendrick Derrell Johnson, 30, of Macon, was arrested on June 13.

On June 9 at approximately 1:53 a.m., Kirksville Police responded to the area of ​​North Franklin and East Cottonwood Street for a report of shots fired. Officers in the area heard the gunshots and the shots were reported by citizens.

Police contacted people in the area and learned that the incident initially began downtown between two groups of people before escalating near North Franklin and East Cottonwood. There was verbal altercation, physical altercations, and gunfire between the two groups. No people were struck by gunfire, but one vehicle was struck.




During the subsequent investigation, police identified Johnson as the suspect who fired the shots. He has since been charged in Adair County District Court with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
