Two-time champion SB safety ‘most definitely’ ready for Bills training camp

The last game he played in was Super Bowl LVIII.

After signing with the Buffalo Bills as a free agent in March, safety Mike Edwards was back on the field during mandatory minicamp. The experienced defender, who helped the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers win Super Bowls, was unavailable for much of the OTAs while nursing a shoulder injury.

“I don’t do everything, I just do as individuals,” Edwards said during an interview with WGR 550 radio reporter Sal Capaccio after the June 12 minicamp practice. “Not quite where I want to be, but it’s a step in the right direction.”

Edwards, 28, who did not miss a game for the Chiefs last season, had seven tackles and a pass defensed in the 25-22 championship-winning victory over the San Francisco 49ers last February.

Edwards’ inability to participate in OTAs opened the door for reserve safety Damar Hamlin to get more meaningful practice opportunities, and the NFL CBPOTY finalist reportedly performed well in open media sessions.

The Bills are also looking to replace former safety Jordan Poyer and likely Micah Hyde. After being released by Buffalo, Poyer signed a one-year contract with the rival Miami Dolphins. Meanwhile, Hyde is not under contract and is currently considering retirement.

Several safeties are competing to fill the void in the Bills’ defensive backfield, primarily Edwards, holdover Taylor Rapp and second-round rookie Cole Bishop.

Even though he had a delayed start with Buffalo, Edwards said he will be ready to compete when training camp rolls around.

“Most definitely,” Edwards said.

The Bills are due to report July 23 in Rochester.
