Fort Kent shooting investigation leads to yellow flag order

Fort Kent police are releasing details of an investigation into a reported shooting Wednesday in the area of ​​Pleasant Street, where several schools are located.

Fort Kent Police Chief Michael DeLena said in a news release Thursday that an incident related to a “mental health matter” occurred late Tuesday and extended into the early hours of Wednesday.

The chief said Thursday that police were able to determine the origin of the incident and contact the person. No injuries were reported in the shooting.

Department officers were issued a yellow flag weapons restriction order, DeLena said in the news release, and no charges or arrests were made.

On Wednesday morning, police responded to a report of a shot heard in the area of ​​Pleasant Street, near MSAD 27 schools and the University of Maine at Fort Kent.

Area schools were advised by police early Wednesday to “either cancel or postpone school activities,” the department said.

27 MSAD schools delayed opening but resumed classes at 10 a.m. after receiving permission from local police. UMFK chose to remain closed and announced it would not reopen until Thursday.

“The cancellation or delay of all three schools was a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and faculty until the incident was resolved,” Thursday’s news release said.
