LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A PGA Championship worker was struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club Friday morning.

Following the accident, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was arrested after he allegedly tried to avoid traffic to get to the golf course where he planned to tee off at the second major of the season earlier in the day.

The tournament released the following statement: “This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker at one of our suppliers was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus in front of Valhalla Golf Club.” This is for all of us, involved in the PGA Championship, heartbreaking. We extend our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones.”

The accident happened before sunrise in the rain on the road in front of Valhalla Golf Club.

More than 3,100 volunteers are working at the PGA Championship this week and the tournament is expected to bring more than $80 million to the city’s economy and serve the more than 200,000 spectators during the week.

“Part of this is a community effort,” John Lindert of the PGA of America said earlier this week. “It’s a wonderful, wonderful venue. The community is extremely supportive. We don’t have any more tickets. The hospitality was outstanding.”

How much the accident on Friday morning will mar the event remains to be determined.

The second round was delayed an hour and 20 minutes because of the fatal accident and possibly the arrest of Masters champion Scottie Scheffler. Second-round play began at 8:35 a.m. and Scheffler was scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m

Scheffler wants to win the first two stages of golf’s year-long Grand Slam and starts Friday tied for 11th place.
