Federal authorities have been called in to investigate the death of Mica Miller, the wife of a South Carolina pastor who local officials said died by suicide when she shot herself last month.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office reportedly announced Monday that it has asked the U.S. Attorney’s Office for South Carolina and the FBI to help investigate Miller’s death amid questions surrounding her damaged relationship with her estranged husband, John Paul Miller came up.

The sheriff’s office said last week that Miller, 30, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after her body was found April 27 in a forest in North Carolina.

Miller also called a dispatcher and claimed she was killing herself and had been seen purchasing a gun leading up to her death, law enforcement said.

The sheriff’s office said her husband, 44, was not involved in her death. She had slapped divorce papers on John Paul days before her death.

“The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office has been in contact with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in South Carolina since the beginning of the investigation into Mica Miller,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Monday, according to WPDE.

“Based on the information gathered during the investigation and jurisdictional considerations, the Sheriff’s Office has requested the assistance of both agencies. No further information will be released at this time.”

The priest allegedly sent Mica an email apologizing for posting a topless photo of her online weeks before her death, NewsNation reported, citing a copy of the note.

Mica’s relatives have called on police to “thoroughly” investigate her death. They also claim that John Paul abused his wife, although the pastor has denied this.

A few days after receiving the apology note over the photo, Mica sent her lawyer an affidavit claiming she had been “abused in every possible way” since they tied the knot.
