Trea Turner hits two home runs, Aaron Nola earns 100th career win in Phillies’ 8-6 win over Braves

ATLANTA — Trea Turner hit a pair of two-run home runs Aaron Nola earned his 100th career victory against Max Fried and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 8-6 on Friday night.

The National League East-leading Phillies extended their lead over second-place Atlanta to 10 games by winning the first game of the weekend series.

Nola (10-4) retired the first 10 Atlanta batters before allowing a single to Ozzie Albies in the fourth inning. Austin Riley followed with a two-run home run to center field. Albies had three hits, including a home run, and Marcell Ozuna added a three-run hit in the eighth inning off Jose Alvarado.

The Braves’ three homers weren’t enough to overcome the power of Turner, the shortstop who was voted one of Philadelphia’s three starters for the National League All-Star Game on Wednesday. Third baseman Alec Bohm and first baseman Bryce Harper were also voted in by fans, but Harper’s left hamstring injury leaves his starting status uncertain.

Turner hit his first home run off Fried (7-4) in the Phillies’ three-run fourth inning. Turner’s second home run went 459 feet into the left-field seats in the sixth inning for his 16th career multi-home run game.

Nola improved his career record to 100-75. He scored three more runs and struck out eight times in six innings.

Fried allowed five runs and a season-high 11 hits in six innings.

Three Atlanta errors led to two unearned runs in the Phillies’ three-run seventh game.

Jeff Hoffman pitched a perfect 10th inning for his eighth save.

Phillies: Right-handed pitcher Tyler Phillips was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Manager Rob Thomson said Phillips adds depth to the bullpen, especially with rain forecast for the weekend. Right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte was sent to Lehigh Valley and right-handed pitcher Luis F. Ortiz (right elbow strain) was moved to the 60-day disabled list. … Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber (left groin strain) is expected to run the bases Saturday. Harper “isn’t far behind,” Thomson said.

Braves: SS Orlando Arcia started after having an abscessed tooth removed, which caused him to miss three games. … Outfielder Forrest Wall was sent to Triple-A Gwinnett to clear a spot for recalled Eli White, who was 0 for 4 as a starter in left field, striking out three to end the game. Outfielder Ramón Laureano continues to be sidelined with lower back soreness, leaving the team one player shy of having a full, active roster. The Braves signed outfielder Eddie Rosario to a minor league contract, and Rosario tripled in his Gwinnett debut. Rosario was released by Washington on Wednesday. Rosario, 32, played with Atlanta from 2021-23 and was the 2021 NLCS MVP. “We know what he’s capable of,” manager Brian Snitker said.
