Four Houston-area cities have the most moves in Texas

Texas is the No. 1 state for moves in 2024, according to a new report from moveBuddha — and four Houston-area cities have seen the most moves so far this year.

The relocation analytics company’s report shows that domestic migration accounted for approximately 186,767 new residents between 2022 and 2023. Although the influx has slowed significantly since then, the number of people leaving the state has also declined.

So far this year, the ratio of inbound and outbound moves in Texas has increased 17% year over year, meaning many more new residents are moving in than people leaving the Lone Star State. California largely fuels this influx: more than 25% of all out-of-state moves to Texas come from California, followed by 6.7% from Florida, 4.9% from New York, 4.4% from Washington and 4.1% from Illinois.

Four Houston-area cities top the list for the Texas influx: Cypress, Conroe, Katy and Sugar Land. Cypress, ranked No. 1 in the state, records 246 entries per 100 exits, giving it an entry-to-exit ratio of 2.46. Meanwhile, Conroe has a ratio of 2.3, followed by Katy at 2.21 and Sugar Land at 1.94.

Additionally, Texas is the No. 1 state in the nation for immigration internet searches in 2024, with nearly one in five people looking to move to a new state searching in Texas.
