Here are the rules for the historic Biden-Trump debate in Atlanta on CNN

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – For the first time in U.S. history, a sitting president will debate his predecessor in a nationally televised event Thursday night in Atlanta.

But President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, along with their respective campaigns, also agreed to an entirely new debate format described by CNN, rules that were apparently intended to prevent a repeat of their 2020 debacle in which they interrupted and heckled each other relentlessly. and ignored calls for decorum from Fox News moderator Chris Wallace.

First, the debate will feature two commercial breaks during the 90-minute broadcast; previous televised debates did not allow television commercials.

Neither man is allowed to make opening statements. The candidates will stand in front of identical desks; both will make a two-minute closing statement, and via a coin toss, Trump got the final argument.

The debate will begin with a question, with Trump and Biden having two minutes to respond; this will be followed by one-minute rebuttals and responses to the rebuttals. Their microphones will be muted except when their turn to speak comes.

The two candidates receive a pen, a notepad and a bottle of water on stage; no written notes are permitted.

Thursday night’s debate also will not include a live audience. It takes place at CNN’s Atlanta studios in Midtown near 10th Street and is hosted by CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.

How can I watch the presidential debate?

The debate will be broadcast live on CNN, CNN International, CNN en EspaƱol, CNN Max and CNN.com. The debate will also air on CBS, so you can watch it on Atlanta News First.
