June 12 – Well, it was a Mad Tuesday, wasn’t it? Let’s collectively take a deep breath and move on to the second half of the week.

๐Ÿšจ Four people were injured, including the suspect, in a shooting at the Peachtree Center food court Tuesday afternoon. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the suspect was a convicted felon who should never have possessed a gun.

๐Ÿš Police from Atlanta, DeKalb and Gwinnett, along with the Georgia State Patrol, were involved in a pursuit that began downtown and continued on I-85 after a Gwinnett County Transit bus was reportedly hijacked Tuesday afternoon. One person was killed and a suspect was arrested.

๐Ÿš‡ Central Atlanta Progress President AJ Robinson joined Mayor Andre Dickens in calling on MARTA to halt the renovation of the Five Points station, calling the plan “deeply flawed.”

๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ The Atlanta Pride Committee has revealed the 2024 Atlanta Pride Festival logo and theme โ€“ โ€œUnited With Prideโ€ โ€“ for the October 12-13 event.

๐Ÿ’ธ The Brookhaven City Council approved the use of Special Project Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funding for the Lavista Park and Peachtree Creek Greenway update.

๐Ÿš— The Tucker City Council approved two drive-thru lanes at a new barbecue restaurant, Jim ‘N Nicks, on Briarcliff Road.

๐Ÿชฆ South-View Cemetery โ€“ the final resting place of Congressman John Lewis and baseball great Hank Aaron โ€“ has applied for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

โš–๏ธ A jury yesterday found President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, guilty of three misdemeanor gun charges.

๐Ÿ“‰ Shares of Paramount Global fell 8% after Shari Redstone ended merger talks with Skydance.

๐ŸŒญ Joey Chestnut said he was “gutted” after being banned from this year’s Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, an event he has won 16 times, due to his sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods based of plants.

1. Dornoch wins Belmont Stakes for West Paces Racing

๐ŸŽ Local Dornoch owners saw their racehorse take a surprise victory at 156th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

Larry Connolly of Buckhead, founder and one of the owners of West Paces Racing, said horse racing as a sport is full of heartbreak, but when things go well, there are special moments.

In the 10-horse field for the Belmont Stakes, Dornoch was in sixth position at the start, near the middle. Connolly said Dornoch broke cleanly and closed in on the lead out of the first turn, as expected. After that, Connolly said he knew they had a chance to win.

2. Harold Michael Harvey Remembers Representing Arrested Students During Freaknik

โš–๏ธ In Atlanta, the name Freaknik is associated with heavy traffic, music and street parties, as shown in the recent Hulu documentary.

As the HBCU student event grew in popularity, around 1993 the city began to tighten its grip on what was allowed, enforcing traffic and drinking laws more strictly than in the past .

In 1994, Mayor Bill Campbell announced that the city would begin to combat Freaknik and that the black students who visited Atlanta each year would no longer be as welcome as before. But when it came time for Freaknik in 1995, Harold Michael Harvey worried that students wouldn’t heed the city’s warning.

That year, Harvey spent his Freaknik Weekend helping arrested students.
