HISD storm damage: District expected to announce school openings after deadly rain, winds hit several campuses

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Independent School District will decide Sunday whether students can return to their respective campuses Monday after Thursday’s severe storm left several campuses non-operational.

On Saturday, Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles surveyed the damage at Sinclair Elementary School, one of the district’s campuses hardest hit by heavy rain and 100 mph winds. Tree branches, debris and insulation were scattered outside the building’s foundation.

It is one of the four schools that suffered the most damage. Pugh, Robinson and Paige elementary schools suffered broken windows and downed trees; however, officials said the buildings are structurally sound.

On Saturday, 77 campuses were without power. Crews worked around the clock to restore power after 136 schools were affected.

The district said its goal was to have all students back in classrooms Monday morning, but Miles said if the student’s original campus was still without power, they would be bused to another campus.

According to CenterPoint Outage Tracking Tool, 350,029 customers were still without power Sunday morning. The company said it is working on restoration efforts that will be completed by Wednesday.

HISD is expected to announce the decisions Sunday starting at noon.
