Crestwood student dead after accident in Medina County

A 13-year-old Crestwood Middle School student died in a traffic accident in Medina County on Friday.

Crestwood Local Schools posted on its Facebook page Saturday that Veronica Turpel died unexpectedly in an accident on Friday. An employee of Green Funeral Care, which is arranging the girl’s funeral, confirmed that Turpel died in the accident in Medina County.

The Medina County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that the accident is still under investigation.

“Veronica was a valued member of our school community whose presence touched the lives of many students and staff alike, and this loss will be deeply mourned by the Crestwood community,” the post said. Counselors were on site at Crestwood High School on Monday to help students and school staff cope with Turpel’s death.

“We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Veronica’s family and friends during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they process this profound grief and loss,” the post said.

Turpel’s obituary described her as a “very spirited soul” and “proud Crestwood Red Devil” who had just completed seventh grade.

“She loved singing, the arts, dancing to Native American music, being a people person, laughing and running and being with her friends. She had a special fondness for animals and enjoyed being outdoors and camping,” her obituary said. “Veronica loved to tease her family to get their attention, but she truly wore her heart on her sleeve and never missed an opportunity to say ‘I love you.'”

Funeral services are planned for Thursday at Green Funeral Care, 4668 Pioneer Trail in Mantua. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by memorials at 7 p.m.
