Erie 1 BOCES Students Participate in First-Ever Art Competition at Villa Maria College

Students from 10 local districts all received an invitation and then time to create a piece of art inspired by it.

BUFFALO, NY — Villa Maria College hosted a first-ever friendly art competition among Erie 1 BOCES students Thursday morning.

Middle and high school students from 10 different districts participated in the activity, during which they each received an invitation and then time to create a piece of art inspired by it.

“Today’s prompt was ‘Music in Motion,’ so they create a prompt based on their favorite song or genre,” said Daniel Lynch, senior arts and education coordinator.

“I chose pop music because it helps me stay optimistic when things are tough,” added North Tonawanda student Ella Royer.

Matthew Mysliwi said: “I think being an artist, being able to create and express yourself is extremely important. I think it’s a wonderful way for people to come and share their art.”

Lynch said the word “competition” was used loosely during the event.

“Today it’s more festive, so the students know that even though it’s a competition and they’re competing for prizes, it’s really now just about showing off their talents “, did he declare.

Jillian Torella, Outreach Education Coordinator, added, “We’ve just reaffirmed that what we’re doing here is relevant and growing, you know you see these students coming forward with all this talent and they would thrive really here at Villa.”
