Mass shooting in Birmingham 5 Points South leaves four dead: What we know today as manhunt continues

Local and federal agents are looking for anyone with information about a deadly mass shooting that left four people dead and at least 17 others injured outside a Birmingham club Saturday night.

The shooting occurred shortly after 11 p.m. in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South as people were waiting in line to get into the Hush hookah and cigar lounge.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond said the shooting may have been a contract killing and that more than 100 bullet casings were found at the scene.

Here’s what we know so far about the fatal shooting. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

How can people help?

Police and Mayor Randall Woodfin are urging anyone with information to speak to officers, and businesses in the area are being asked to share surveillance video.

You can submit information to police here. You can also call investigators at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

Who was killed?

On Sunday evening, police identified three of the four people killed as Antria Holloman, 21, Tahj Booker, 27, and Carlos McCain, 27. A fourth person died in hospital.

Who was injured?

Police estimate that 17 people were injured in the shooting and the chaos that followed.

Among the many injured was 24-year-old Gabriel Eslami of Trussville.

“There’s just gun smoke and bodies on the sidewalk,” he said. “Physically it’s hard to walk, but thank God nothing bad was hit.”

Alicia Rohan, spokeswoman for the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said Sunday evening that UAB Hospital had treated a total of 12 victims.

“This included a deceased victim who was transported from the scene to UAB Hospital, according to the Birmingham Police Department,” she said. “We are currently treating four victims who are in good to critical condition.”

How did the shooting happen?

Thurmond said several shooters drove up in a car, got out, fired shots and then drove away.

The target of the assassination was likely found by the shooters at the crime scene. “Wherever that (target) person was, that’s where it would have taken place,” Thurmond said.

Who are the suspects in the shooting?

As of Sunday morning, police had not identified the suspects or the individuals involved.

Was Hush Lounge involved?

Ryan Pryor, the Hush opened in 2019 and retired in March after 20 years as a police officer in Birmingham, was in his club when shots were fired.

“I want to stress that this had nothing to do with Hush himself. My condolences go out to the families and I stand with Birmingham in putting an end to this violence. This gun violence must stop,” Pryor said.

On Sunday morning, Pryor prepared to reopen the store.

“We have to try to return to some kind of normality,” he said.

Hush, 2012 Magnolia Ave., is a speakeasy-style lounge in the basement of the Pickwick Place shopping center. The club often offers bottle service, parties, DJs and celebrated its five-year anniversary in June.
