30 booked for road blockade after accident in Navi Mumbai

Thane: Police have filed an FIR against nearly 30 people for allegedly blocking a road after an accident took place in Navi Mumbai in which an autorickshaw passenger died and another person was injured, an official said on Thursday.

At around 7:15 am on Wednesday, a trailer travelling on GTI Road in Nhava Sheva area collided with an auto rickshaw.

Two passengers of the autorickshaw were injured and one of them, Bharat Rama Thakur (52), a local resident, died, said the Nhava Sheva police station officer.

The injured person was taken to hospital.

Later, between 2 and 4 pm, nearly 30 people from the surrounding villages gathered on the JNPT road.

They carried out a “Rasta Roko” (road blockade) and shouted slogans demanding the extradition of the person responsible for the accident, otherwise they would not take possession of the victim’s body, he said.

Police arrested trailer driver Amjad Rafique Khan (42) and booked him under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act, the official said.

However, protesters wanted police to hand over the driver to them and blocked the road for several hours, he said.

The police have filed a complaint under sections 189(2) (unlawful assembly) and 126(2) (wrongful deprivation of liberty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Police Act against 30 protesters, of whom 15 have been identified, he said.
