Braves promote Hurston Waldrep to start Sunday’s game at Washington

Another great pitcher for the Atlanta Braves is set to make his major league debut. 2023 first-round pick Hurston Waldrep is with the Braves in Washington and will start Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com.

Waldrep moved up four levels last season after the Braves used the 24th pick in the draft on him. He went to major league spring training, but was returned to start at Double-A Mississippi for the 2024 season. He got off to a bit of a slow start there, but made nine starts while posting a 2 ERA .92 and a 3.07 FIP in ’49. 13 sleeves. Waldrep was promoted to Gwinnett last week and recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts while allowing three runs in six innings.

Waldrep’s departure will push back Max Fried’s departure until Tuesday in Baltimore. Spencer Schwellenbach remains on the active roster and is expected to start Wednesday’s game against the Orioles. Atlanta will have to amend its 40-man roster to add Waldrep, but will have both Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuña Jr. moving to the 60-day injured list.
