Man killed, 2 toddlers injured in rollover accident on Hawaiian island

WAIKOLOA (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 27-year-old Waikoloa man was killed and two young children injured in a car crash early Tuesday morning, Hawaii Island Police said.

It happened around 1:35 a.m. near mile marker 5 on Waikoloa Road.

Investigators said the driver was traveling east on Waikoloa Road when he missed a right turn and crossed the double solid yellow line.

According to police, the vehicle then left the Makai shoulder of the road and crashed into a rocky embankment.

The driver was thrown from the sedan when it overturned, HPD said.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he later died. He was identified as Samiu Kealoha Kama Olevao.

HPD said two young girls – ages three and four – were also found in the vehicle. They were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment and later released.

Speed ​​and impairment are believed to have contributed to the accident. According to police, Olevao was not wearing a seatbelt.
