Woman found dead on 36 E;  injured man

Houston police began an investigation after a woman was found dead and a possible suspect was found injured Friday morning, officials said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing in the 700 block of East 36th Street in the Independence Heights neighborhood of north Houston.

According to Deputy Chief Megan Howard, officers received a call about a shooting at a home at the above address. An argument was reported between a woman and a man who lived in the home with other family members and their 2-year-old child.

Officials said when they arrived, the woman was found dead in the back of the home with a gunshot wound. Witnesses at the scene reported that the man left the house on a bicycle with their young child.

Other officers in the area noticed a man matching the description on a bicycle with a child, and when they approached him to investigate, the man pulled out a gun and shot himself, according to Howard.

Houston Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and took the man to the hospital where he reportedly underwent final surgery.

The 2-year-old child was unharmed and placed in the care of his family members.

According to Asst. Chief Howard, the shooting remains under investigation and authorities have recovered the weapon.
