87 arrests and citations in Louisiana counterfeit license plate investigation

KENNER, La. (WGNO) – A patrol initiative involving fake license plates in Kenner has resulted in a total of 87 arrests and citations.

According to Kenner police, police noticed an increase in vehicles with fake or fictitious license plates in February.

Officials said this was not uncommon during traffic stops, as they also discovered drivers who had fake driver’s licenses or insurance.

The KPD chief directed the patrol and traffic divisions to proactively track and investigate traffic violations related to these license plates.

According to the KPD, the following number of arrests or demonstrations involving fake license plates took place between February 1 and May 20:

  • 31 cases with fictitious license plates and drivers without a license or insurance
  • 29 cases with fake license plates and drivers without a license
  • 14 cases with fictitious license plates and the driver’s lack of insurance
  • In 13 cases it was just a fictitious license plate

Officials also reported that there were a total of nine accidents involving vehicles with fake license plates. In six cases, the driver reportedly did not have a driver’s license or insurance, and in four cases, he did not have a driver’s license.

Officials said the license plates can be purchased online, but they warn drivers that if they are caught driving in Kenner they will be pulled over and either arrested or ticketed.

“Tackling those who drive illegally is a top priority for this department. Just follow the rules. It’s very simple. Please make sure your license plates are legitimate to avoid fines and legal problems,” the chief said.
