Appalachian State Softball’s Houston Named All-Region

For the second time in his career, App State outfielder Kayt Houston earned NFCA All-Region honors, marking the second time the Mountaineers have been NFCA All-Region honorees in program history.

Houston, a first-team All-Sun Belt selection, was named to the All-NFCA Central Region third team on Thursday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association after posting a historic senior season. She joins Allie Cashion (2012, 2013) as the only players in App State history to earn all-region recognition twice.

The Rock Hill, South Carolina native posted one of the best seasons in program history in 2024, finishing with a record .434 batting average, along with 72 hits, 18 doubles, 13 homers and 40 points produced. Her .434 batting average helped her win the regular-season Sun Belt batting title and is 16th best in the country as of Thursday.

Among Sun Belt players, Houston also ranks in the top three in slugging percentage (first), on-base percentage (second), OPS (first), hits (third) and doubles ( third). To cap off her historic season, the left-hander became App State’s all-time hitting leader after tallying the 230th hit against James Madison on April 20. She finished with 247, 18 ahead of the record previously set by Lindsay Glover.

Houston became the first Mountaineer to be named to the All-Sun Belt first team twice and only the third Mountaineer to receive all-conference nomination three times (Cashion, 2011-13 and Katie Boyd 2008-11). She totaled a team-leading 22 multi-hit games, including a four-hit, two-homer game on Feb. 16 against Le Moyne that earned her Sun Belt Player of the Week honors.

The NFCA honors softball student-athletes from all 10 Association regions with first, second and third team selections. NFCA member head coaches from each respective region nominated student-athletes and voted for the teams. All student-athletes are now eligible for the 2024 NFCA Division I All-America teams, which will be announced on June 1.
