Single-vehicle accident in Mamou causes pedestrian death

MAMOU, Louisiana – On June 8, 2024, shortly before midnight, Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a fatal car crash on Louisiana Highway 104. The crash killed 63-year-old Sharron Hampshire of Ville Platte.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Hampshire was traveling eastbound on LA Highway 104 near Studio Lane near the fog line. At the same time, a 2016 Honda Pilot was traveling eastbound on LA Highway 104. For reasons still under investigation, the Honda struck Hampshire.

Hampshire was fatally injured and died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the Honda was properly restrained and suffered no injuries.

Although the Honda driver was not suspected of being impaired, he voluntarily provided a breath sample that showed no alcohol. Hampshire took a standard toxicology sample and sent it for analysis. The accident remains under investigation.

“If pedestrians are mindful of their safety when walking near and crossing roads, it can reduce the likelihood of accidents,” said Sergeant Ross Brennan. “Walking against the direction of traffic allows pedestrians to anticipate approaching vehicles and respond effectively. In addition, choosing brightly colored clothing or reflective accessories during darker hours improves visibility to motorists.”

In 2024, Troop I investigated 16 fatal accidents with 17 fatalities.
