Mosquito tests positive for West Nile virus in Houston: tips and safety measures to #preventthebite

HOUSTON (KIAH) – A mosquito sample collected by Harris County Public Health tested positive for West Nile virus this week, according to County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s office. This is the first positive sample of 2024. It was collected in the 77019 zip code of Harris County.

Recent rains and warmer temperatures can provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Harris County Public Health encouraged residents to #preventthebite.

Follow these simple steps to protect yourself against mosquitoes:

  • ADVICE – pour or empty standing water from pet bowls, flower pots, tires, buckets and other containers. Empty any standing water near your home.
  • THROW – throw away debris, trash and other unwanted items in your home.
  • TAKE ACTION – protect yourself from mosquito bites by applying an EPA-registered repellent to yourself and your loved ones when outdoors. If possible, wear long sleeves, pants and socks.
