MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A first day alert remains in effect as a line of strong thunderstorms will develop across northern Iowa and move into southern Wisconsin. These storms will be particularly strong as they cross the Mississippi River and move into our western counties. When penetrating the line, wind gusts can reach speeds of over 80 miles per hour. Tornadoes are possible, as are large hailstones over an inch in diameter.

You should prepare your yard and home for the coming storms: Clear away any lawn or patio items that will be damaged or could damage your home.

What’s next…

Storms will move through our western counties between 5 and 7 p.m. and reach the I-90 corridor between 7 and 8 p.m. The line will continue eastward, leaving the region at 10 p.m. Many areas will experience heavy rainfall in a short period of time, so we need to watch out for ponds or flooding in low lying areas.

The rest of the night will remain calm and the humidity will drop significantly behind the storms. When you wake up tomorrow morning, temperatures will be around 50°. Clouds may persist until Wednesday morning but will clear as the day progresses. Highs will reach the low 70s, with strong westerly winds.

Looking ahead…

Sunny and calm Thursday with high temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. We will be monitoring for further rain and storm chances ahead of Memorial Day weekend. Right now the best chance of rain is later in the day on Friday.

Memorial Day on Monday looks typical for the time of year with high temperatures around 21 degrees and a mix of clouds and sun. A few showers cannot be ruled out at the moment.
