ASTROS GAMER: Houston goes cold against Chicago in series opener

The Houston Astros were defeated by the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Wednesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois. The win begins a road trip for the Astros who are looking to move up in the MLB standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The White Sox started rookie right hander Jonathan Cannon, who was just making his seventh career start. He allowed a two-out single in the first, but that was all.

The Astros countered with Framber Valdez. He also allowed a single in the first, but nothing crossed the plate.

Both pitchers had easy second innings, and Cannon worked a clean third as well. In the bottom of the third, the White Sox offense got going. After two walks and a single, an RBI ground out got them on the board. Astros manager Joe Espada was also ejected in the inning.

Valdez walked the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Andrew Vaughn got another run home on an RBI ground out, but Valdez escaped further damage. He would end up going six innings, allowing just the two runs.

Cannon continued his great outing, and he worked all the way into the ninth inning. He recorded the first two outs, but then Jonathan Singleton and Mauricio Dubon hit back-to-back singles. That chased Cannon after eight and two-thirds innings of work. John Brebbia came on for the one-out save and finished things off for the Sox.

BIG NUMBER: 8.2

The Astros could not score off rookie starter Jonathan Cannon in eight and two-thirds innings. The lack of offense contributed to a costly loss against the team with the worst record in the MLB.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jonathan Cannon

The rookie pitcher excelled, with the best outing of his young career. The Astros did have seven hits, but they couldn’t find any runs on the night. He struck out four on the night.
