LIVE UPDATES: Water now out in parts of metro Atlanta while crews repair main outage – WSB-TV Channel 2

The first main break was reported at the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and James Boulevard. P. Brawley Drive around 8 a.m. A spokesperson for the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said Mark Winne, Channel 2 investigative reporter that the break was a 48-inch transmission line directly connected to the city’s water treatment plant. A second 32-inch main cable is also broken.

The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said impacts from the main break are widespread and affecting downtown Atlanta. Some customers are without water and others have low water pressure.

The interruption of water service will begin at 5 p.m. for the affected areas.

The boil water advisory will remain in effect until DWM is permitted to lift it following sampling protocols.

The DeKalb County Fire Department sent a 3,000-gallon water truck to the city of Atlanta.

“DeKalb County is honored to be able to support the City of Atlanta during this crisis,” said DeKalb County Fire Chief Darnell Fullum. “DeKalb County stands ready to provide additional resources if necessary. »

A third water main appears to have ruptured in the West Paces Ferry area. This break, on Beechwood Road, affects residents, businesses and fire hydrants in this area. It is not known whether this main break is linked to the other two.

Parts of metro Atlanta in the shaded area will experience a water outage starting at 5 p.m. when crews begin making repairs. Residents in these areas are urged to prepare to be without water for an “indefinite” period of time.

The DWM is calling for immediate water restrictions to allow system pressures to recover.

2:12 p.m.

A boil water advisory has been issued for much of metro Atlanta. Anyone experiencing low pressure or outages is urged to boil water before drinking or use bottled water for drinking, cooking, preparing baby food and brushing teeth.

DWM also reports that another water main failed in East Atlanta, in the area of ​​2922 Glenwood Ave.

It is unclear when water will be restored or how many customers were affected.

The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management now says a 36-inch water main also broke. Both pipes are transmission lines that transport large volumes of water to the Atlanta metro area.
